Code of Conduct (Bonnyrigg Judo Club)
Our Core Philosophy
Judo, "The Gentle Way," is a system of physical, moral, and intellectual education founded by Jigoro Kano. We uphold the core principles of maximum efficiency (Seiryoku Zenyo) and mutual benefit (Jita Kyoei). This Code ensures a safe, respectful, and disciplined environment for all members.
I. Student Responsibilities (The Judoka)
All students (Judoka) must adhere to the following rules to maintain the integrity and safety of the training area.
A. Respect and Discipline (Rei)
-
Bowing (Rei): Bow upon entering/leaving the training area and when starting/ending practice with a partner, showing respect.
-
Attention: Pay undivided attention to the Instructor; do not interrupt or engage in unrelated conversations during class.
-
Self-Control: Maintain emotional control, especially during sparring (Randori). Frustration, anger, or rough play is unacceptable.
-
Respectful Address: Address Instructors and senior students respectfully (e.g., Sensei, Sir/Ma'am).
Assistance: Offer help to lower-ranked or newer students.
B. Health, Hygience, and Attire
-
Uniform (Judogi): The Judo uniform (Judogi) must be clean, fitted, and in good repair, out of respect for training partners.
-
Personal Hygiene: Shower before and after practice. Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed short to prevent injury.
-
Safety Items: Remove all jewelry, rings, watches, and other personal items before stepping onto the mat.
-
Illness and Wounds: Do not attend class if you are ill or have a contagious condition. All cuts or open wounds must be fully covered with athletic tape and a bandage.
C. Safety and Training Etiquette
-
Safety First: Only attempt techniques after receiving clear instruction and approval from the Instructor.
-
Conduct: Running, jumping, roughhousing, or any activity unrelated to Judo is strictly forbidden on or near the mat.
-
Mat Entry/Exit: Always ask the Instructor for permission before leaving or re-entering the mat during practice.
II. Parent/Guardian Expectation
-
Positive Support: Encourage effort and discipline over winning and sportsmanship.
-
Instructor Respect: Avoid interfering with instruction. Address questions or concerns with the Instructor privately, before or after class.
-
Punctuality: Ensure students arrive and are picked up promptly.
-
Observation: If observing, remain quiet to minimize distractions.
Adherence is mandatory. Violations are addressed swiftly and fairly based on severity and frequency.
Steps for Enforcement
-
Verbal Warning: A private warning from the Instructor, explaining the breach and correction needed.
-
Removal from Mat: Student is asked to sit off the mat for persistent or serious breaches (e.g., disrespect, dangerous behavior).
-
Suspension: Repeated safety or integrity violations result in temporary suspension.
-
Expulsion: Extreme cases (e.g., violence, bullying, theft) may result in permanent expulsion.
